ONE DAY WORKSHOP ON OUTCOME BASED EDUCATION
Venue- Lecture hall 8, Universal School of Administration
The Universal School of Administration, through its IQAC initiative, organized a workshop on “Outcome-Based Education” on August 23, 2023. Dr. Babu V, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Commerce and Management at St. Paul’s College, also serving as the IQAC Coordinator, was the featured speaker for the session.
Outcome-Based Education (OBE) is an educational approach that centers around defining measurable outcomes or learning objectives that students should be capable of demonstrating by the end of a course or program. The workshop primarily focused on the mapping and assessment of program outcomes, program-specific outcomes, and course outcomes.
Course outcomes and program outcomes mapping involve aligning the expected results or learning objectives of individual courses with the broader learning objectives of a program or curriculum. This alignment ensures that course outcomes contribute to the overall achievement of program objectives.
The objectives of the workshop were as follows:
- To understand how to map course outcomes with program outcomes and program-specific outcomes.
- To create clear and measurable learning outcomes that align with program outcomes.
- To calculate the attainment level of course outcomes.
- To facilitate student learning and skill development.
The outcomes of the workshop included:
- Understanding the distinctions between Course Outcomes (CO), Program Outcomes (PO), and Program Specific Outcomes (PSO).
- Gaining the ability to frame Program Outcomes.
- Learning how to map Course Outcomes with Program Outcomes and Program Specific Outcomes.
- Understanding the process of calculating attainment levels.
Feedback analysis from the workshop indicated that faculty members found the session valuable and informative, particularly in terms of gaining clarity on mapping and clarification of COs, POs, and PSOs. They expressed a desire for more sessions along the same lines.
In response to the feedback, the IQAC cell decided to conduct additional programs related to the same topic in the upcoming days, catering to both students and faculty members. This reflects the institution’s commitment to enhancing the understanding and implementation of Outcome-Based Education within its academic framework.
