Sudan Conflict Triggers Massive Regional Humanitarian Emergency

Why in the News ?

Escalating conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan have created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with mass killings, famine, and displacement. The situation is worsening due to ethnic violence, political instability, and limited international response, further compounded by the collapse of basic infrastructure needed for a pollution free environment and public health.

Conflict Dynamics in Sudan and South Sudan:

●  The war in Sudan began after the 2021 military coup, leading to a power struggle between Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

●  General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan leads the SAF, while Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) commands the RSF.

●  The conflict has caused 150,000–400,000 deaths and fragmented Sudan into rival-controlled territories.

●  In Darfur, RSF forces have targeted non-Arab communities like Masalit, Fur, and Zaghawa, leading to allegations of genocide.

●  Capture of El Fasher (2025) marked a major escalation, with thousands killed during the siege.

●  In South Sudan, fragile peace has collapsed, with renewed fighting between government and opposition forces.

●  Regions like Jonglei State and Akobo are witnessing mass displacement and rising violence.

Humanitarian Crisis and Regional Spillover

●  Sudan faces the world’s largest displacement crisis, with over 12 million people displaced since 2023.

●  Around 4 million refugees, mostly women and children, have fled to neighbouring countries.

●  Severe famine and hunger crises have emerged, especially in Darfur and Kordofan regions.

●  The healthcare system has collapsed, with hospitals destroyed and humanitarian aid restricted.

●  In South Sudan, over 2,80,000 people have been displaced due to recent conflict escalation.

●  Cross-border impacts are intensifying, with refugees moving between Sudan and South Sudan, linking both crises.

●  Border closures and deportations by countries like Egypt and Chad are limiting safe refuge options.
