Tamil Nadu Unveils Major Power Infrastructure Expansion
Why in the News ?
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced major investments in power infrastructure, including a new supercritical thermal power station in Thoothukudi, a statewide transmission upgrade and improved electricity distribution infrastructure in Chennai.

Power Generation and Transmission Expansion
● The State government announced the Tamil Nadu Transmission Improvement Scheme with an estimated cost of ₹33,066 crore.
● The scheme aims to strengthen electricity transmission networks connecting major power consumption centres across Tamil Nadu.
● It envisages construction of 196 new substations and transmission lines covering nearly 15,000 km.
● Existing transmission infrastructure will also be strengthened to improve grid reliability and power evacuation capacity.
● A new supercritical thermal power station will be established in Thoothukudi at an estimated cost of ₹20,800 crore.
● The project is intended to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s electricity-generation capacity and meet rising power demand.
● The announcement comes amid concerns over inadequate investment in thermal and hydropower capacity in recent years.
Strengthening Chennai’s Distribution Network
● The government also announced a ₹1,762-crore project to modernise Chennai’s electricity-distribution infrastructure.
● The initiative is aimed at improving the reliability and resilience of power supply in the metropolitan region.
● Chennai has experienced power disruptions during monsoons, while electricity demand rises substantially during summer.
● Strengthening distribution infrastructure is therefore important for handling peak demand, reducing outages and improving service quality.
● Together, generation, transmission and distribution investments seek to address Tamil Nadu’s growing electricity requirements.
● The approach highlights the importance of developing an integrated power-sector infrastructure, covering adequate generation capacity, efficient transmission and reliable last-mile distribution.
About Supercritical Thermal Power Technology:
● Supercritical thermal power plants operate at temperatures and pressures above the critical point of water, enabling more efficient electricity generation.
● Unlike conventional subcritical plants, supercritical technology generally requires less coal per unit of electricity generated, improving thermal efficiency.
● Higher efficiency can help reduce CO₂ emissions per unit of electricity, although coal-based generation remains a significant source of greenhouse-gas emissions.
● The existing Thoothukudi Thermal Power Station has five units of 210 MW each, giving it an installed capacity of 1,050 MW.
● Under the proposed restructuring, these units would be replaced through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
● Two new units of 800 MW each would raise the station’s total installed capacity to 1,600 MW.
