TEACHERS’ DAY HONOURS EDUCATORS FOR NATION BUILDING CONTRIBUTIONS

Why in the News ?

On Teachers’ Day, President Droupadi Murmu will confer National Teachers’ Awards in New Delhi, recognising exemplary educators from school and higher education institutions. She emphasised continuous learning, technological adoption, innovative pedagogy, independent thinking and teachers’ role in shaping responsible citizens.

Teachers’ Day and National Teachers’ Awards

●     Presidential recognition: President Droupadi Murmu will honour 48 school teachers with National Teachers’ Awards for their exemplary contribution to education and student development.

●     Wide representation: The selected school teachers belong to 27 States, seven Union Territories and six Central Government organisations, reflecting geographical and institutional diversity.

●     Higher education awards: National Awards will also recognise 21 teachers and faculty members from higher education institutions and polytechnics.

●     Institutional diversity: The higher-education awardees include faculty from Central Higher Education Institutions, State Universities and polytechnics, covering both government and private institutions.

●     Innovative educators: Documentaries highlighting the achievements and innovative practices of awardees will showcase how teachers contribute to improving educational outcomes.

●     Continuous learning: Teachers are encouraged to update their knowledge and skills continuously to respond effectively to changing educational requirements.

●     Historical association: Teachers’ Day is observed annually on 5 September, commemorating the birth anniversary of former President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

●     Scholar-statesman: Radhakrishnan was a renowned philosopher, educationist, author and statesman who made significant contributions to Indian education and philosophy.

●     National leadership: He served as India’s second President and earlier as the country’s first Vice-President, occupying important constitutional positions.

●     Educational philosophy: His ideas emphasised the transformative role of education, teachers and intellectual inquiry in developing individuals and strengthening society.

●     Nation-building role: Education contributes to social progress, democratic citizenship, scientific temper and human development, making teachers important agents of national development.
