Why in the News?

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the PM PVTG (Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups) Development Mission on January 15, celebrated as JanJaatiya Gaurav Divas.

Key Objectives:

  • The mission focuses on targeted schemes to uplift socially and economically disadvantaged Scheduled tribes.
  • It aims to empower PVTGs by providing them with essential amenities and opportunities.

Improving Living Conditions:

  • Saturate PVTG families with essentials: safe housing, clean water, and sanitation.
  • Prioritize quality education, healthcare, and nutrition.
  • Improve road and telecom connectivity in PVTG areas.

Economic Empowerment:

  • Focus on sustainable livelihoods for PVTGs.
  • Create income-generation avenues for self-reliance.

Financial Support:

  • Anticipated 24,000 crore allocation from the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Tribes.
  • Budget spans three years, driving positive changes for PVTGs.

Integrated Schemes:

The Mission extends its reach to various existing schemes such as

  • Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna,
  • Sickle Cell Disease Elimination,
  • TB Elimination,
  • 100% immunization,
  • PM Surakshit Matritva Yojana,
  • PM Matru Vandana Yojana,
  • PM Poshan, and
  • PM Jan Dhan Yojana.

What are PVTGs:

In 1975, the Indian government established the PVTG category on recommendation of Dhebar commission

There are tribal communities who have declining or stagnant population, low level of literacy, pre-agricultural level of technology and are economically backward and have been identified and categorized as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).

PVTGs Demographics:

  • Initially, 52 groups were recognized, and in 1993, 23 more were added, totaling 75 PVTGs.
  • These PVTGs are part of the 705 Scheduled Tribes in India.
  • As per the 2011 census, they are dispersed across 18 states and one Union Territory , emphasizing their unique and marginalized status.
  • Collective population is of approximately 28 lakhs.
