Why in the News ?

World Health Day 2026 is being observed globally with the theme “Together for health. Stand with science”. The day emphasises scientific collaboration, One Health approach, and strengthening healthcare systems to ensure accessible, affordable, and equitable health services for all, including the right to a pollution free environment.

Theme and Global Significance:

●  World Health Day is observed annually on April 7 to promote global health awareness and environmental democracy.

●  Theme for 2026: “Together for health. Stand with science” highlights the role of scientific collaboration and environmental impact assessment in health planning.

●  Focus on the One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health through proper environmental clearances and sustainable practices.

●  Emphasises need for multilateral cooperation to convert scientific evidence into actionable policies, incorporating the precautionary principle in health governance.

●  Celebrates achievements in medical science, public health systems, and global partnerships while addressing environmental jurisprudence in health matters.

India’s Perspective and Government Initiatives

●  Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan stressed that good health is key to societal prosperity and requires adherence to the polluter pays principle in environmental health.

●  Called for promotion of preventive healthcare, balanced lifestyle, and equitable access to services, including proper implementation of EIA notification for health infrastructure projects.

●  Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated commitment to building a healthy and inclusive society with streamlined environmental clearances for healthcare facilities.

●  Highlighted contributions of healthcare workers and need to strengthen health systems while avoiding ex post facto approvals in health infrastructure development.

●  Government initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and PM Bharatiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana aim to improve affordability and accessibility of healthcare, complementing environmental health policies under the Forest Conservation Act and Coastal Regulation Zone norms.
