Indian Navy Commissions INS Nipun for Underwater Operations

Why in the News ?

The Indian Navy commissioned INS Nipun, the second Diving Support Vessel (DSV) of the Nistar-class, at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. The indigenously built vessel will strengthen specialised underwater capabilities, including diving operations and submarine rescue, particularly under the Western Naval Command.

INS Nipun: Capabilities and Significance

●     INS Nipun is a purpose-built Diving Support Vessel designed and constructed indigenously by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam.

●     It is the second DSV of the Nistar-class, expanding the Navy’s specialised fleet for underwater operations.

●     The vessel is designed to undertake a wide range of diving and underwater intervention operations in demanding maritime conditions.

●     It is equipped with modern diving systems that enable sustained support to naval divers during complex underwater missions.

●     Its underwater intervention capabilities allow specialised operations requiring prolonged activity beneath the sea surface.

●     The vessel incorporates advanced systems for navigation, platform management and precise station-keeping, improving operational stability and accuracy.

Strengthening India’s Underwater Warfare Preparedness

●     Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan described INS Nipun as a significant addition to the Navy’s specialised underwater capabilities amid changing strategic conditions.

●     The vessel is expected to enhance the Western Naval Command’s ability to undertake complex underwater operations.

●     Its dedicated role in diving support and submarine rescue strengthens the Navy’s preparedness for emergencies involving underwater assets.

●     The ship’s advanced systems allow sustained operations in challenging maritime environments, improving the Navy’s multi-domain deep-water operational capability.

●     INS Nipun also demonstrates India’s increasing ability to design and construct specialised naval platforms domestically.
