● According to the MapBiomas environmental monitoring network, the Brazilian Amazon recorded only 3.1 million hectares of burned area in 2025, the lowest level since systematic records began in 1985.
● The sharp decline follows the devastating 2024 fire season, when prolonged drought, high temperatures, and widespread human-induced fires severely affected the world’s largest tropical rainforest.
● A delayed rainy season between 2024 and 2025 reduced the period suitable for agricultural burning, thereby limiting the spread of forest fires.
● Reduced deforestation also contributed to fewer fires by decreasing the amount of dry vegetation available as fuel.
