Understanding Maritime Security & IONS:
●  Indian Ocean Region (IOR):○   Handles nearly 80% of global oil trade and major sea lanes○   Critical for global trade, connectivity, and energy security with strict coastal regulation zone compliance
●  Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS):○   A multilateral naval forum for cooperation among IOR countries○   Aims to enhance maritime security, cooperation, and trust-building while avoiding ex-post facto environmental violations
●  Table-Top Exercise (TTX):○   A discussion-based simulation exercise○   Tests decision-making, coordination, and crisis response without field deployment, ensuring retrospective environmental clearances are not required
●  India’s Maritime Strategy:○   Focus on blue economy, maritime security, and regional stability guided by environmental jurisprudence principles including the Vanashakti judgment○   Increasing role in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations with proper environmental clearances
●  Key Challenges in IOR:○   Piracy (Gulf of Aden)○   Illegal fishing and trafficking○   Geopolitical competition and strategic chokepoints
