Mission Senehjori Boosts Assam’s Muga Silk Industry

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched Mission Senehjori, a comprehensive initiative aimed at transforming Assam’s renowned Muga silk sector into a globally competitive luxury textile industry while enhancing livelihoods in the Northeast through sustainable practices and environmental democracy.

Mission Senehjori: Objectives and Key Features

●  Mission Senehjori is a cluster-based development programme focused on strengthening the entire Muga silk value chain with proper environmental clearance mechanisms.

●  The initiative seeks to promote Assam’s unique golden Muga silk as a premium global luxury textile while ensuring compliance with environmental impact assessment norms.

●  It covers all stages of production, including host plant cultivation under the Forest Conservation Act framework, silkworm seed production, reeling, weaving, and value addition.

●  The mission also emphasizes branding, quality assurance, export promotion, and digital traceability of Muga silk products through sustainable environmental jurisprudence.

●  Integration of tourism, cultural heritage, and traditional craftsmanship forms an important component of the programme, promoting a pollution free environment.

Economic and Cultural Significance

●  The initiative aims to generate sustainable livelihoods for local communities engaged in sericulture and weaving, adhering to the precautionary principle in resource management.

●  It seeks to enhance the competitiveness of the Northeast’s traditional textile sector in international markets while following the polluter pays principle.

●  Improved infrastructure and market access are expected to increase income opportunities for artisans and farmers without requiring retrospective environmental clearances.

About Muga Silk and Sericulture in India :

●  Muga Silk is a unique variety of silk produced primarily in Assam and is known for its natural golden-yellow sheen.
●  It is obtained from the silkworm Antheraea assamensis, which is endemic to Assam.
●  Muga silk has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag for its uniqueness and regional identity.
●  India produces four major varieties of silk: Mulberry, Tasar, Eri, and Muga.
●  Assam is the leading producer of both Muga and Eri silk in India.
●  Sericulture is an important agro-based rural industry that contributes to employment generation, women’s empowerment, and export earnings.
