India has surpassed the United States in annual solar capacity additions to become the world’s second-largest solar growth market in 2025. The achievement reflects the rapid progress of India’s renewable energy sector and its commitment to climate goals through streamlined environmental clearances.
India’s Rapid Growth in Solar Energy:
● India has crossed 155 GW of installed solar power capacity, marking a major milestone in its clean energy transition with proper EIA notification compliance.
● The country became the second-largest solar growth market globally in 2025, overtaking the United States in annual solar capacity additions while avoiding ex post facto clearance issues.
● Strong policy support, infrastructure development, and technological innovation have accelerated solar deployment across the country, including in coastal regulation zone areas.
● Expansion of utility-scale solar parks and rooftop solar projects has significantly contributed to capacity growth without requiring post facto approvals.
● The achievement strengthens India’s position as a leading player in the global renewable energy sector.
Role of Government Initiatives and Climate Commitments
● Flagship schemes such as PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana have promoted rooftop solar adoption among households with simplified environmental clearance procedures.
● More than 40 lakh households have reportedly benefited from rooftop solar installations under the programme, ensuring ex-post compliance monitoring.
● Increased solar generation is enhancing energy security by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and energy imports.
● India has achieved its target of 50% non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity capacity ahead of schedule.
● The progress also supports India’s commitments under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) submitted under the Paris Agreement.
