BRICS Environment Ministers Meet Advances Green Cooperation

The 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting is underway at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, under India’s BRICS Chairship 2026. The meeting aims to strengthen environmental cooperation, facilitate consensus and develop collective responses to climate change, ecological degradation and sustainability challenges.

12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting:

●  The 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting is being hosted in New Delhi with participation from Ministers, senior officials, policymakers and environmental experts.

●  Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav is presiding over the meeting.

●  The forum provides an opportunity for member countries to discuss shared environmental challenges and strengthen multilateral cooperation.

●  Deliberations focus on developing consensus-based approaches and translating environmental commitments into practical outcomes.

●  The meeting also seeks to strengthen coordination within the BRICS Environment Working Group.

●      Such platforms are significant for emerging economies facing common challenges related to climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and resource degradation.

●  India’s theme for the BRICS Chairship 2026 is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

●  Resilience focuses on strengthening communities, infrastructure and ecosystems against climate-related disasters and environmental shocks.

●  Innovation can promote clean technologies, renewable energy, circular economy practices and sustainable resource utilisation.

●  Cooperation can facilitate the sharing of environmental technologies, expertise, finance and successful policy experiences.

●  Sustainability seeks to balance economic development with environmental conservation and intergenerational equity.

●  India aims to ensure meaningful engagement and positive outcomes through the Environment Working Group.

●      Stronger BRICS environmental cooperation can contribute to a more coordinated Global South response to emerging ecological and climate challenges.
